Everyone comes to an agreement with life.
Some settle and let life dictate the terms.
Others write their own agreement, and life agrees with their terms.
People who are unstoppable, consistently positive, endlessly persistent doers of dreams are the people of three agreements.
The first agreement deals with internal congruence.
Inner congurence happens when your mind, heart, and will are all in agreement working together and heading in the same direction.
The second agreement focuses on external congruence.
Outer congruence happens when what you think, say, and do are the same and are working together to make positive things happen.
The third agreement is with God.
You get in agreement with God about who you are and what you can do with his help.
Three agreements are better than two, and two agreements are better than one.
When you get your agreements right, you have an amazing life.
THE FIRST AGREEMENT
What is internal congruence?
Internal congruence looks at your mind, your heart and your will.
Inner congruence exists when your mind, heart, and will are all working together in a non-ambivalent fashion to achieve a worthwhile goal.
People have understood the importance of inner congruence for thousands of years. The Bible teaches that you are to love God with all your mind, all your heart, and all your strength.
This passage of scripture lays out what it means to achieve internal congruence. You must get you mind, your heart, and your will all heading in the same direction if you want big things to happen in your life.
If your mind wants one thing, your heart wants something else, and your will is not willing to do whatever it takes, you are in trouble.
You are heading in different directions in your mind, heart, and will, and this lack of congruence literally tears you apart. You are fighting against yourself until you get your mind, heart, and will to work together and head in the same direction.
Each time you face an important decision, you must ask yourself three questions:
1. Do I want this with my head?
2. Do I want this with my heart?
3. Am I willing to do whatever it takes?
If you answer yes to all three questions, ambivalence is not a problem. You have internal congruence.
You will be able to move forward in a positive manner because every part of who you are is on the same page working to achieve the same objective.
If you answer no to any of the questions, ambivalence is present, and inner congruence does not exist.
You may as well stop where you are and resolve the ambivalence before you try to move ahead. You will never be able to move forward in a positive manner until you have inner congruence.
THE SECOND AGREEMENT
External congruence relates to what you think, say, and do.
External congruence happens when what you think, say, and do are exactly the same. There is no gap between thinking, saying, and doing. They are all in agreement and heading in the same direction.
Talk is cheap, fast, and easy. Doing is hard, expensive, and takes time.
The difference between saying and doing is the difference between heaven and hell, the difference between bogging down in Nowhere Land and living your dreams.
The gap between thinking, saying, and doing stops millions of people in their tracks.
You cannot rock the world if there is a gaping chasm between what you think, what you say, and what you do.
THE THIRD AGREEMENT
In the third agreement you get in agreement with God about who you are and what you can do with his help.
The first two agreements are about what you can do on your own. The third agreement is about what you can do with God’s help.
Jesus said, “All things are possible to those who believe,” and he followed that up by saying, “With God, all things are possible.”
When you get in agreement with God, you don’t just take things up a notch, you take them to a whole new level.
These three agreements will make or break your life.
The moral universe grinds slowly, but it grinds sure, and ambivalence will grind your dreams into dust.
If you are at war with yourself, you will have a miserable life, and your reward will be broken dreams.
If you get in agreement with yourself and in agreement with God, your life will become an awesome adventure.
